When The Universe Takes Out The Trash For You, Just Say Thank You

Okay, this is a paraphrase of a great quote I almost remember, and ‘trash’ is perhaps too harsh a word, but the metaphor works, and here’s how: sometimes things happen in your life that make you feel sad or hurt. And then days, weeks or months later, you realize how what happened was really a good thing.

I had a long friendship that ended quite unexpectedly. My friend ghosted me and then moved away. I was hurt and I spent, in retrospect, way too much time reaching out, and ruminating on what went wrong. Recently, someone suggested I reach out again (it’s been a minute) and I briefly considered it.

And then I remembered that this person was never really a great friend to me. It was one-sided where all the benefits accrued to them with all the costs accruing to me. Why would I even want to renew that friendship? And so I decided I wouldn’t reach out.

The universe did me a favour by removing this person from my life and there was a good reason for that. And now I realize I didn’t need to spend any time feeling sad or hurt.

Try this ONE thing

The next time something disappears from your life, and you’re tempted to mourn the loss and work to get it back, consider for a second that the universe might be doing you a favour. In which case, all that’s required is to say thank you. Do that.

Hey! Are you already successful and accomplished? Do you have many things to appreciate about your life right now? Are you always open to learning more and growing yourself?

Despite all your successes, do you sometimes doubt yourself? Do you hesitate to go after what you really want in life?

Or maybe you dismiss your past successes, putting them down to luck, and don’t really see how extraordinary you really are?

If this sounds like you, you and I should have a conversation. Drop me a line here, karen.laidlaw.theONEthing@outlook.com, and let’s talk!
