I like to read about and follow the Stoics. I’m currently reading Stillness is the Key by Ryan Holiday and came across this recipe for a good life.
I am thinking this makes for a better start to the new year that resolutions that we abandon a few weeks in. Instead of one big resolution, how about a small list of things to cultivate in your life from the study of Winston Churchill’s life.
Churchill experienced both triumph and disaster, two world wars and fifty-five years in parliament, nine of which were as Britain’s Prime Minster. He is widely known for his ‘we shall never surrender’ speech to the House of Commons as Britain prepared to oppose Hitler.
The author suggests that if we want to be as productive as Churchill, we need to cultivate these traits:
· Rise above our physical limitations
· Find hobbies that rest and replenish us
· Develop a reliable, disciplined routine
· Spend time getting active outdoors
· Seek out solitude and perspective
· Learn to sit, to do nothing when called for
· Get enough sleep, and rein in our workaholism
· Commit to causes bigger than ourselves
Not a bad list to start with, and something we can all work towards as we kick off 2025!
Try this ONE thing
For me personally, learning to sit and do nothing is what I’m going to work on. Which one calls to you?
Want to experience coaching? I like to start with a deep, get-to-know-you conversation to see if we are right for each other. Sometimes we talk for one or two hours at no charge. I have no goal except to bring about transformation. Together we work on the lies, the self-deception, the fears of the power you perceive to be outside yourself. We work on your difficulties in making decisions and your inability thus far to make bold choices in life and to follow through and trust yourself completely to do so.
The irony for some people is that the very thing that they want the coaching for (an indecisive, half-hearted life) is what’s keeping them from deciding whether to get coaching.
